YOUTH PLANNING FOR THE PARISH AND WORLD YOUTH DAY
|
|
Members of various youth groups of the parish met on Monday, June 21st, 2010.
Those present included: Gianne Wilson-DeWeever, Gabrielle Everetsz, Doran Joseph, Rosetta, Patrick Rohan, Bernadine Stephens, Bernadine Van Veen and Fr. Bob.
Topics included:
1)Youth Mass especially for Graduates
2) AEC Workshop for Youth Leaders
3)World Youth Day, Madrid 2011
4) Discussion of present youth programs in parish
5) Discussion of hiring a part-time youth minister
6) Open floor for feedback and discussion
RESULTS:
1) Youth Mass held especially for graduates of all schools on Friday, June 25th, 2010. Refreshments followed. A good turn out for first attempt and little time to organize due to many students leaving the island. "It was good to see all three priests concelebrating" commented one participant.
2) AEC Workshop for Youth Leaders: the parish did not officially know about this workshop, and although the due date for registration was pass the deadline, three members have been able to register with the Sister in charge in St. Lucia. Mrs. Bernadine Van Veen, Mrs. Gianne Wilson-DeWeever, and Dr. Albertine Mathurin-Jurgensen will represent the parish from July 20th-25th, 2010 in St. Lucia. The theme: "Empowering Youth Leaders to Build a Culture of Solidarity and Justice."
3) World Youth Day, Madrid, Spain 2011: World Youth Day will be held from August 11th, 2011 until August 21st, 2011 in Madrid. A parish committee has been formed of: Gianne Wilson-DeWeever, Gabrille Evertsz, and Patrick Rohan. Dr. Albertine Mathurin-Jurgensen will be the consultant for the group. They will meet in late July/early August, and then have a meeting with representatives from Saba and St. Eustatia. After which, a meeting will be held with Deacon Meris from the Diocese of Willemstad.
4) Present youth programs were shared that were happening in the parish, especially the LaSallette Children's Group, Youth for Christ, the parish youth groups in both English, Spanish and Haitian.
5) The discussion of at least a part-time youth coordinator who would work closely with the catechetical program came up for discussion. Ideally it would be a young couple if possible. Various requirements include a strong, practicing Catholic faith; ability to work with youth; able to guide and direct youth appropriately; able to work with and coordinate various parish programs along with the catechetical director. The choice must take time and be made carefully. Anyone suggestions for nominees, please contact the parish priest!
One youth worker is strongly convinced that THE YOUTH ARE NOT ONLY OUR FUTURE...we must be reminded that they are also OUR PRESENT, and we must include and engage them accordingly!
